Swing the Whole Club Forward – John Hayes Golf Feb 2018 Tip Newsletter

JohnHayesGolf.com Newsletter Golf Tip – February 2018

For your golf game: “Sir, did you purchase your clubs?” Manuel de la Torre, World Golf Teachers and PGA of America Hall of Famer, asked this question of one student. He had a purpose for this unusual question that was asked during a golf lesson. The man responded, “Yes I bought my clubs!”
Manuel went on saying, “When you bought them did you pay for the entire club? I ask this because you keep using just the club HEAD; I thought that maybe you hadn’t paid for the shaft and the grip.”
Manuel wanted to get a smile from this man and make him really become aware that the WHOLE CLUB is to be swung forward, as this student had been using his hands to cast the club HEAD at the ball. When you cast the club HEAD at the ball during the forward swing – what happens to the speed of the grip-end of the club? It slows down. When you use your hands to cast the club HEAD at the ball – what happens to the speed of your arms? The arm speed also slows down.
You must swing the whole club forward AS A UNIT, as Manuel would often say. Please remember that swinging the whole club forward does NOT mean that you should put tension in your arms or wrists. This is still a free and flexible swinging motion but, because you paid for it all, swing the whole club forward to the other side.
