Tournament Preparation to Avoid Nervousness
For your golf game: The Golf Channel recently had a series on the career of Jack Nicklaus and I particularly liked this comment that Jack made about his main purpose for arriving at the Major Championships a week ahead of the tournament.
“You are, generally speaking, nervous because you’re not PREPARED and you’re not sure of what you are going to do. So, if I could get most of that out of the way before the tournament, all I had to do was focus on playing golf,” said Jack Nicklaus.
Many of you play the same course frequently so you can get a specific plan for each hole. Look at the weather forecast for the day of your golf game and check the wind direction and speed to begin to plan what you will do at each hole. You may be able to find out the hole locations for the day when you arrive at the course and see if that might affect the shots you will want to play on various holes. Then you can practice those shots in your warm up session on the range before your round.
If there are 2 or 3 events during your golf season that you want to peak for, your “Major Championships,” then do some extra planning and preparation at that particular golf course. See if this leads to better results and more fun for you during the tournament. You may see that there are problem holes and problem shots that often hurt your score and then you can gear your practice sessions to improving your technique to handle those holes and those shots. Then you are really practicing with a purpose and your improved PREPARATION should begin to show up in your attitude and on your scorecard.
