Create Good Mental Habits – John Hayes Golf Nov. 2018 Golf Tip

JohnHayesGolf.com Newsletter Golf Tip – November 2018

For your golf game: There will be a golf teaching seminar of the Manuel de la Torre Golf Teaching System Group held on November 12 and 13 in Scottsdale, AZ this year. Golf teachers who are members of the PGA of America and the LPGA will attend to continue to improve their teaching skills. Both Associations require their Members to attend such education seminars to maintain their status. One of the great things about being involved with the game of golf is that you should never stop learning and perfecting your swing and your approach. And you must always try to improve how you use your mind.
At the Manuel de la Torre Teaching Seminar I am going to present to the teachers there some things that Manuel said during lessons, and these were lessons given when he was in his nineties! His eye for the swing and the student were just as good even then.
“When your golf game is ruled by your bad shots, your chances of improvement are zero,” said Manuel. This was to encourage the student to PRACTICE getting his mind back on what he needed to do to produce good shots even after a shot was missed. Golfers can get into a “corrective” mental attitude where they are trying to solve some problem, a problem that may have just occurred or that they are worried might occur, instead of just having a clear picture of what needs to be done and then doing it.
Manuel went on to say: “Training your mind to block out bad shots and get back to what should be done takes PRACTICE. We are all creatures of habit.” So the next time you miss a shot say to yourself, “Alright, this will give me chance to practice forgetting that shot and getting my mind back on what I should do.” After you follow this mental procedure many times you will then have that new mental habit which will be good for your golf.
Obviously this implies that you have a clear picture of what you need to do to produce a good shot. Of course nobody does it correctly every time but you need to determine what your procedure will be and get your mind back to it when you miss a shot.

Upcoming clinics and events: We will have a slight price increase for golf lessons at Chi Chi’s that will take effect on November 1, 2018. If you are thinking of buying a lesson series for yourself or as a gift then you may want to do so by Oct. 31 to save.
